Separated from the mainland by backwaters, Valiyaparamba fishing village is an island with the Arabian Sea as one of the borders. Located about 30 km from Bekal, Valiyaparamba backwaters is one of the most picturesque backwater boroughs in Kerala. The island located in River Tejeswini, is known for its natural beauty. A boat cruise in traditional 'kettuvallam' (houseboat) offers panoramic view of the coconut groves in this island.Being a fishing centre, different moods of fishing scenes adds to its beauty. The cool breeze, coconut lagoons, variety of sea birds, activities like husking, etc. provide a larger canvas for the travellers. The Island is also well known for its mussel cultivation.
To explore this cleanest backwater destination, BRDC has introduced boating facilities, such as houseboats from Kottappuram (near Nileshwar) for the benefit of tourists to experience the backwater cruise. Recently a houseboat terminal has been developed at Ayitti and Edayilakkad in the Valiyaparamba backwaters. Valiyaparamba backwater region is being developed as satellite destination for Bekal. Kerala Government has assigned BRDC to implement a rural community tourism project in this region.
